In a time torn apart by war, a poor woodcutter and his wife live in a large forest. One day, a woman finds and rescues a little girl who brings an irreversible change to the lives of the couple and those whose paths the child crosses. A few years after this remarkably dark period, there lived a modest and elderly couple of German carpenters. The man goes to cut down large trees, and the woman gathers small branches. Both spend a hard day’s work to reach a small house in the middle of the forest, where a hot soup and a tired old dog await them. The woman has never had a child, the woman begs for everything she has, has abandoned God or never learned about it. He asks the sky, the tree, and even the train gods for the train. And one day the train gods answered his prayers. In this empty corner of the forest, the train crept through the white winter snow and slowly but grimly reached its dreaded destination. And one day the baby is thrown from the train only to be picked up by an old wooden woman. A heartless thing for some, but not for him. The result is a beautifully crafted tragedy, a story about humanity: the loving force within that builds and sacrifices, and its inherent evil side that retaliates and takes revenge. Michel Hanavicius’ animated film borrows a highly comedic style that takes you into the heart of an enchanted forest, combined with its unique cast of characters and bleak World War II setting, this is one of the best tearjerkers in years. jerks.
